Emma Raducanu's Dream Wimbledon Run Ends in Fourth Round Retirement

Breathing Difficulties Cut Short British Wildcard's Historic Tournament

Wimbledon, UK - July 5, 2021

British wildcard entrant Emma Raducanu's dream Wimbledon run came to an abrupt end in the fourth round on Monday as she was forced to retire from her match against Sorana Cirstea due to breathing difficulties.

The 18-year-old wildcard had captured the hearts of the nation with her stunning performances in the first three rounds, where she defeated Vitalia Diatchenko, Marketa Vondrousova, and Tereza Martincova without dropping a set.

Raducanu started Monday's match brightly, taking the first game to love, but she began to struggle with her breathing shortly afterward. She called for the trainer twice during the second set and eventually decided to retire while trailing Cirstea 6-3, 3-3.

"I'm really disappointed that I had to retire, but I started to feel shortness of breath and dizziness during the second set," said Raducanu. "I gave it my all, but I couldn't continue."

Despite the disappointing end to her tournament, Raducanu's performance has been a major breakthrough for the young British star. She is the first British woman to reach the fourth round of Wimbledon since Johanna Konta in 2017.
